




At the start of the new millennium, the water market in Scotland underwent major changes culminating in the creation of a single water company, Scottish Water, in April 2002.
Scottish Water has an annual turnover of around £1bn and is the fourth largest water company in the United Kingdom. Over 2.5bn litres of water per day are supplied through 46,000km of pipes to 5 million customers in 2.2 million households. Scottish Water's operational footprint covers 78,000km?, which represents one-third of the United Kingdom's land mass.

Turriff has worked extensively for Scottish Water across a broad range of its network maintenance and enhancement activities. This experience is reflected in the fact that Turriff has been asked to take part in the development of the 'premier' contractor concept by Scottish Water. It is envisaged that, once approved, a 'premier' contractor will be allowed by Scottish Water to work on its network with far greater independence and autonomy. This could include being permitted to undertake tie-ins on new developments, an activity which is currently non-contestable (i.e. not open to competition).
