Impact moling services are provided by Turriff Group company, Underground Moling Services Ltd, known throughout the utility industry as UMS.
Impact moling is an ideal trenchless technique for straightforward pipe, cable and ducting with a diameter between 25mm and 150mm, and up to about 30m in length. Furthermore, impact moling plant and equipment is compact and is ideal for sites where space is confined or restricted. With impact moling, operational and environmental disruption is minimal.
A 'mole' is a torpedo-shaped pneumatic device which drives through soil using a percussive or hammer effect. The pipe or duct is usually drawn in behind the mole. Impact moling works in straight lines - unlike horizontal directional drilling which can be guided - and requires both a launch pit and a reception pit. In the launch pit, the mole is lined up with the catch pit and then set in motion.
Impact moling has many applications including the renewal of lead water pipes, the installation of utility pipework, and cable laying.
