'The quality and safety of work on the gas network is critical.'
Over time, Ofgem has worked to make the gas market more competitive. On activities such as new connections, Ofgem has adopted the strategy of gradually allowing more activities to become 'contestable'. Contestable activities are those where the work is no longer restricted to the gas utility's own workforce or appointed contractor.
Fundamental to the success of this strategy has been the development of an independent accreditation scheme for contractors - GIRS (Gas Industry Registration Scheme) - to ensure that quality and safety standards remain paramount.
Achieving GIRS accreditation is a demanding process. The applicant has to submit a detailed dossier including comprehensive method statements, risk assessments and quality plans, all of which are scrutinised in detail by technical auditors at Lloyds Register.
Turriff was one of the first Scottish contractor to achieve GIRS accreditation. Turriff's accreditation covers both routine construction, commissioning and connections up to 2 bar (CCCR).
